What is a CFO?

Sep 28Andrew Tucker

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is primarily responsible for managing the financial risks of a corporation. This position is responsible for financial planning, record-keeping, financial reporting to higher management and has financial authority to make appropriations and authorize expenditures for an organization. You may also hear or see the terms Director of Finance or VP of Finance.

The CFO typically reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) / President / Owner and to the Board of Directors.

Today, the role of the CFO is under greater scrutiny, internally and externally. CFOs face never ending pressure to cut costs, grow revenue and ensure adequate controls over company assets.  Economic uncertainty, increased regulatory requirements, financial restatements and increased investor scrutiny have forced them into the spotlight.

CFOs are expected to play four diverse and challenging roles.

  1. Steward – preserving the assets of the organization by minimizing risk and ensuring that the financial records are correct
  2. Operator – running an efficient and effective finance operation
  3. Strategist – helping to shape overall strategy and direction
  4. Catalyst – instilling a financial approach and mind set throughout an organization to help other parts of the business perform better
